Abstract
The complexity of today’s business has made organizations depend on team working for day-to-day operations. However, not all teams operate successfully and in a productive manner. To form a team, the similarity coefficient algorithm of group technology (GT) technique is extended beyond shop floor application to identify team members based on proficiency level. As many variables affect team performance and no comprehensive team dynamics model is available to evaluate team performance, this paper focuses on the development of a mathematical model that will enable the best combination of team members based on three variables – proficiency, diversity and communication network within a team, and assessment of the overall team performance. The overall team performance is obtained by combining the efficiencies because of proficiency, diversity and communication. The mathematical model also further proves that the efficiency because of proficiency and efficiency because of diversity are inter-related.

Key words: Team dynamics, proficiency, diversity, communication network, overall team performance
