INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR MANAGEMENT OF TECHNOLOGY (IAMOT) PRESS RELEASE RIAS J. VAN WYK RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED ACHIEVEMENT AWARD At a recent ceremony in Vienna, Austria, the International Association for Management of Technology (IAMOT), presented its Distinguished Achievement Award for 2005 to Professor Rias J. van Wyk - a former Director of the Management of Technology Program, University of Minnesota; and recently a Visiting Professor at the Graduate School of Business, Cape Town, and Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Kowloon. This is the highest award conferred by IAMOT. At the presentation in the Festsaal of the Rathaus in Vienna, Prof. Tarek Khalil, President of IAMOT, recognized Dr. van Wyk’s many contributions to the management of technology (MOT). In particular IAMOT noted Dr. Van Wyk’s role in the creative systematization of technological knowledge. In accepting the award, Dr. Van Wyk stressed the merits of systematization and the power of frameworks that unify technological knowledge. “All established fields of knowledge have unifying frameworks. For example economics has the International Standard Industrial Classification (ISIC), while chemistry uses the periodic table of the elements. We are now emulating these achievements for technological knowledge.” “Unifying frameworks yield better tools for high-tech executives, encourage a new generation of technology-conversant managers, and provide the basis for global technological literacy. This is a most fertile field for research, and I am looking forward to further creative contributions from the MOT community.” Dr. Van Wyk is the author of Technology: A Unifying Code, and co-ordinates the activities of Technoscan Centre in Minnesota. He is presently working with investment professionals to assess the technological strength of companies.
